CAN I BRING A VAPE ON A PLANE?

May 01, 2024 • 4 min read

Whether you’re planning a trip across the country or across the ocean, understanding the rules and regulations around vaping and planes is your responsibility as an informed traveller.

Here we’ll provide you with all the information you need to pack your vape device responsibly for your next trip and provide general guidelines about vaping in airports. It’s important to note that even though most airlines require vape devices to be packed in your carry-on luggage, these rules can vary by airline and airport, so it’s always best to do your homework and verify the applicable regulations and rules before taking off.

CANADIAN AIRLINE POLICIES ON VAPING DEVICES

The rules in Canada and internationally are very clear – vaping is not permitted on planes. But where you keep your vaping device while travelling can vary. Transport Canada states that while Canadians are allowed to bring a vaping device on flights within Canada, the device must be kept on the traveller rather than stowed away in a carry-on bag to reduce the risk of fire on planes.1 Since a vaping device has a battery, the same rules apply to a vaping device as they do for packing batteries.1

When it comes to vape pods and e-liquids, these can be packed in a carry-on suitcase or checked luggage. If you choose to bring your e-liquid on the plane in your carry-on bag, remember that you can only bring up to 100ml (3.4oz) of liquid in your carry-on; any larger quantities must be in your checked luggage.2

These rules are specific to Canada. If you are travelling internationally, it’s always best to check the rules and regulations in the countries you are visiting.

INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES VS. DOMESTIC AIRLINES

Rules and regulations may differ between domestic flights and international flights, since international airlines must comply with the laws of the multiple countries in which they operate. If you’re travelling internationally, it’s important that you do your research on vaping laws in the country to which you’re travelling to ensure you comply with the regulations.

CAN I TAKE A DISPOSABLE VAPE IN MY HAND LUGGAGE?

When travelling on most airlines in Canada, as per Transport Canada policy, you will need to place your vaping device in your hand luggage or carry-on luggage. You cannot pack a vaping device or e-cigarette in your checked baggage.1

Disposable vapes should be safely stored and secured in your checked bag if it doesn’t have a battery. If your disposable vape is rechargeable, you will need to carry it with you on the plane.

CAN I VAPE ON A PLANE?

The rules in Canada and internationally are very clear – vaping is not permitted on planes.

CAN I TAKE VAPE LIQUID ON A PLANE?

Any refills or e-liquid you are travelling with must be placed in your checked luggage, as per the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (“CATSA”) guidelines.2 Changes in cabin air pressure can sometimes cause vape pods and vape tanks to leak, so it’s best to place your e-liquid in a plastic bag or container to avoid any unpleasant surprises. If you choose to carry your e-liquid with you in your carry-on bags, note that it counts towards your total flight liquid limits and must be no more than 100ml (3.4oz).2

CAN I VAPE IN AN AIRPORT?

The rules for vaping in Canadian airports are the same as smoking, it is strictly prohibited. Many airports, however, do have designated areas where travellers can smoke or vape located outside or away from the departure terminals. Rules vary with each airport, so make sure to check the rules and regulations of each airport before you travel.

VAPING ON-GROUND - AT THE AIRPORT

CANADIAN AIRPORT VAPING POLICIES

Depending on where you are in the world will depend on whether or not you can buy a vape at the airport. Whilst the UK permits the use of vapes, some countries do not sell or have not legalised the use of e-cigarettes - so you may not be able to purchase vaping products at an international airport outside of the UK.

Airport

Guidelines

Calgary International Airport

Vaping is permitted in a few outdoor areas: outside the terminals in designated areas: Doors 1, 7 and 17 on both Arrivals and Departures levels.3

Edmonton International Airport

There are several designated vaping areas throughout the airport. These can be found at

Outside Door 1 (north end of terminal), Outside Door 10 (south end of terminal) and the Rendez-vous Meeting Area.4

Kelowna International Airport

The environment inside the airport is smoke and vape-free. Designated smoking and vaping areas are available outside the terminal building for public use.5

Montreal-Trudeau International Airport

The use of vaping devices and e-cigarettes is strictly prohibited throughout the terminal building and on the apron. There are areas in front of the terminal where vaping is permitted.6

Ottawa Macdonald – Cartier International Airport

The only designated smoking area at the airport is pre-security, in the 02 parking lot at the north end of Level 1. Vaping is prohibited on airport property. The use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices is not permitted in the terminal. There is no area to smoke once you've gone through the security screening.7

Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport

Vaping is not permitted inside the terminal building; you must smoke outside at least nine metres from all doors.8

Toronto Pearson International Airport

There are 10 designated outdoor smoking and vaping areas. These areas are clearly marked with signage on the ground and the columns. They can be found on all levels of Terminals 1 and 3.9

Vancouver International Airport

Vaping inside the airport is strictly prohibited; those who wish to vape must do so outside the terminal building, in designated smoking areas.10

Victoria International Airport

Vaping is prohibited in all areas of the airport except at designated locations. Two smoking shelters located in the short-term parking lot are the only designated areas where smoking will be permitted on airport property.11

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport

There are designated smoking areas at either end of the terminal building on both Arrivals and Departures. The terminal is a non-smoking building.12

DO AIRPORTS SELL DISPOSABLE VAPES?

Different airports offer different products. For example, in Canada vaping is permitted, and vaping devices can be found at certain airports, however there are some countries that do not sell or have not legalized the use of vaping devices and e-cigarettes, which will make it difficult to purchase vaping products at an international airport outside of Canada.

HOW MANY DISPOSABLE VAPES CAN I TAKE ON A PLANE?

Each airline has its own policy regarding the number of e-cigarettes you can carry onboard and how they must be carried. For more information, check out some of the most popular airline specific regulations below, sourced April 2024.

The rules around e-cigarettes and vaping devices are constantly changing worldwide - ensure you keep up to date with the latest policies and requirements whenever you travel outside of Canada.

Airline

Regulations

Air Canada

Electronic cigarettes (or 'e-cigarettes') are permitted on board, provided they remain stowed and unused in your carry-on baggage.13

Air Transat

E-cigarettes must always be stowed unused in carry-on baggage. Carriage in checked baggage is prohibited. Please note that passengers are not allowed to bring electronic cigarettes to Cuba and Mexico.14

British Airways

All vaping equipment must be placed within your hand luggage. Any liquid components in your hand luggage must be under the 100ml regulations and placed within a clear, sealable bag. You cannot use your e-cigarette onboard the aeroplane. Depending on your destination, you may not be able to bring your electronic vape into the country - ensure you check your destination before packing.15

Easy Jet

You can carry e-cigarettes in your hand luggage. Passengers can bring a maximum of two spare batteries, which must be placed in their hand luggage.16

Emirates

E-cigarettes must be protected onboard to prevent accidental activation – this means, ensuring your vape doesn’t spill, turn on, or leave your bag. Any refills or liquids within your hand luggage must be under the liquid allowance and placed in a clear, sealed plastic bag.17

Flair Airlines

Electronic cigarettes must always be stowed unused in carry-on baggage. Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in checked baggage. Liquid to refill an electronic cigarette is permitted in quantities of 100ml (3.4 oz.) or less.18

Jet2

All e-cigarettes containing batteries must be kept in your hand luggage and switched off for the entirety of the flight (if applicable). The batteries within your vaping device must be under 2g or not exceed a Watt-hour of 100Wh. You cannot charge your e-cigarette onboard the flight. Passengers are limited to two e-cigarettes and/or batteries.19

Porter Airlines

In carry-on baggage

E-cigarette devices may be carried in the aircraft cabin under the following conditions:

  • The battery can remain installed but the device must be carried on your person to prevent accidental activation.
  • Spare batteries must be protected from short circuit and carried in carry-on baggage.
  • Any liquid components must meet safety restrictions for liquids in carry-on baggage.
  • E-cigarettes cannot be used onboard the aircraft.

In checked baggage

E-cigarettes are not permitted in checked baggage due to their lithium battery’s propensity to catch fire.

Laws for using e-cigarettes change frequently and some countries have completely banned the import, export, or use of electronic cigarettes. Please check local regulations for your destination before you travel.20

Ryanair

Passengers can take up to a maximum of 15 electronic devices with them in their hand luggage and up to 20 lithium batteries. E-cigarettes can be placed in hand luggage but cannot be used onboard. Ryanair accepts “smart bags,” which is a bag that contains lithium batteries that are charged via USB ports. You can bring this as part of your carry-on bag. You must always keep the batteries with you.21

Qantas

You must ensure your device is protected to prevent accidental activation, and you cannot charge your device onboard the ircraft.22

TUI

E-cigarettes must be placed within your hand luggage and cannot be used or charged while onboard the plane.23

Virgin Atlantic

Passengers may carry e-cigarettes in their hand luggage. All devices must be individually protected to prevent accidental activation during the flight.24

West Jet

Passengers may transport but may not use e-cigarettes in the cabin. E-cigarettes cannot be in checked baggage and must be placed in carry-on baggage.25

VAPING ABROAD

WHERE CAN I VAPE ABROAD?

Each country has their own rules when it comes to vaping. Before you travel, it’s important to understand the local restrictions of where you’re travelling to, as some countries have severe fines and punishments around the activity of vaping.

CAN I BUY VAPE KITS AND E-LIQUID ABROAD?

If you are travelling for a longer period, it’s important to check the regulations of your destination to ensure you can continue to top up your e-cigarette or buy new disposable vapes.

Every country has different limits on nicotine strengths when compared to Canada. For this reason, be mindful when you’re purchasing outside of Canada, as the strengths may be higher than what you usually consume.

The rules around e-cigarettes and vaping devices are constantly changing worldwide - ensure you keep up to date with the latest policies and requirements whenever you travel outside of Canada to avoid any penalisations or fines.
