Understanding Vaping Coils

Apr 10, 2025 • 4 min read

Vape coils are essential components in any vaping device. This guide will help you understand what vape coils are, how they work, and how to maintain them properly.

Whether you’re an adult nicotine consumer transitioning to vaping or looking to deepen your knowledge, this information can help you better understand your device.

What is a vape coil?

A coil is the heating element inside a vaping device. This part is sometimes classified as part of the ‘atomizer’ (heating element or coil and wick).

The coil is usually made from a wire wrapped in a spiral shape, which is why it’s called the ‘coil’. Vape coils are typically surrounded by an absorbent material called wicking material, usually made of cotton.

The coil component is crucial for creating the vapour you inhale. It connects directly to the battery. When powered, the coil heats up rapidly, vaporizing the e-liquid held in the wicking material.

How do vape coils work?

Most vaping devices use electrical power from a battery to heat an e-liquid solution. The heat causes the solution to turn into an aerosol, which is inhaled by the user through the mouthpiece.

Some vapes have a disposable cartridge, which is a liquid reservoir and heating element combined into a single unit, known as a pod.1

When you activate your vaping device, the battery sends power to the coil and th e electrical resistance in the coil wire creates heat. The heating process happens in several stages:

1.    The battery provides power to the coil

2.    The wire heats up rapidly

3.    The cotton-wicking material, saturated with e-liquid, touches the hot coil

4.    The heat vaporizes the e-liquid

5.    You inhale the vapour through the mouthpiece

How long do vape coils last?

How long the coil lasts depends on a how often you use your device, the power settings and how well you maintain your vape.

Open-system devices are manually filled by adding vaping liquid into a tank or a pod, which is usually on the top of the device.1 They let users replace parts, including the coil.

Closed-system devices can include rechargeable vape devices and disposable devices. Rechargeable devices come with a disposable cartridge or pod that is pre-filled with vaping liquid, which is disposed of after it runs out. Most disposable devices come ready to use and are disposed of after they run out of vaping liquid.1 In these types of devices, the coil is not replaceable.

What happens if you don’t change your vape coil?

If you vape with an open-system device, you might need to replace the coil when it wears out. If you don’t, it may alter your vaping experience with changes to the flavour and in the production of vapour, among other issues that may pop up. Not doing so can lead to changes in flavour and vapour production, as well as other device performance issues.

How to know if your vape coil needs replacing?

There are a few potential signs that your vape coil might need to be replaced:

·      Burnt taste

·      Reduced vapour production

·      Gurgling or popping sounds

·      Leaking

·      Changes to vapour flavour

Never continue to vape with a burnt or damaged coil. If you notice any unusual tastes or device behaviour, replace the coil immediately or speak to an expert for assistance.
