Understanding Vaping Device Parts

Jan 20, 2025 • 3 min read

If you’ve ever wondered what makes your Vuse vape work, you’re in the right place.

This guide explores the different parts of vaping devices and how they work together. So, whether you’re an adult nicotine consumer new to vaping or curious about the technology, keep reading to learn about everything from vape batteries and mouthpieces to coils and wicks.

How do vapes work?

The device heats a liquid into an aerosol (sometimes known as ‘vapour’. Most vaping devices use electrical power from a battery to heat a liquid solution. The heat causes the solution to turn into an aerosol. The aerosol is inhaled by the user through the mouthpiece1

Vape device parts

Most vaping devices consist of a:

  • battery
  • mouthpiece
  • atomizer (heating element or coil and wick)
  • chamber, such as a tank or reservoir to contain a liquid solution
  • Some may have a disposable cartridge (a liquid reservoir and heating element combined into a single unit, known as a pod)1

Battery

The battery provides electrical energy to power your vape. Some vaping devices have rechargeable batteries, while others are single-use.

You can learn more about vape batteries and battery care in our guide: How to optimize your vape battery life.

Cartridge or pod

Vaping devices use e-liquid, which comes in a cartridge or pod, depending on the type of device.

Wick

The wick absorbs the e-liquid and delivers it to the coil for heating.

Coil

The coil is the name of the heating element inside vaping devices. When the battery is activated, it sends power to the coil, which heats up and turns e-liquid into aerosol.

Mouthpiece

The mouthpiece is where users inhale.

Maintaining the parts of your vape

Regular maintenance can help keep your vape working properly. Learn more in our guide to maintaining your vaping device.

In rechargeable vaping devices, batteries should be recharged with a compatible charging accessory. You can learn more about this in our guide: How to optimize your vape battery life.

It's also a good idea to wipe down your vaping device and check for e-liquid build-up, dirt and debris to keep it working at its best.
