Vaping Device Battery Issues Troubleshooting

Apr 10, 2025 • 5 min read

Is your vaping device battery experiencing issues? Then you’ve come to the right place. Here, you’ll find the most common vaping device battery issues and how to fix them. But first, let’s dive into a basic understanding of vaping device batteries.

Vaping devices use lithium-ion batteries to power the heating element and produce vapour. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, also called li-ion batteries, are common in rechargeable products and generally safe to use.2

These batteries are an essential part of all kinds of vaping devices, including rechargeable and disposable models. Understanding battery safety can help you maintain your device properly, avoid malfunctioning, and know when it’s time for a replacement vaping device.

Vaping device battery issues

Lithium-ion batteries can experience issues if they aren’t used safely. If you don’t properly use, store and dispose of your vaping device batteries, they can overheat, leak, burst, or catch fire. Understanding these risks can help you avoid them.1

If the battery is not charging

If your vaping device doesn’t charge, this might be because of a bad connection between the charging cable and the device. This can happen if dirt or grit gets into the charging port or if the cable is damaged.

To troubleshoot this issue, start by checking the charging port for any dirt or damage and clean it carefully if needed. If the cable is damaged, you can try charging with another compatible cable.

It’s always best to use the charger that comes with your vaping device. If you need to replace your charger, buy it from a trusted source and make sure the voltage and current are compatible with your device.2

If the device is not turning on

Vaping device won’t turn on? Start by checking if it is charged enough. Next, look for any damage to the vaping device or charging cable, and make sure all parts are properly assembled or clicked into place.

If you go through these steps and still can’t figure out why your vaping device won’t turn on, it might be time for professional help or a replacement device.

If the device is overheating

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat if they aren’t used or stored safely. If you feel your vaping device getting unusually hot while using it or while it’s charging, there may be an issue with your battery. Immediately stop using it and turn it off.

Put the vaping device on a surface that won’t burn and let it cool down completely before troubleshooting. Avoid soft surfaces, like a couch or bed, because they can trap heat around the battery and cause the device to overheat.2

Avoid overheating by only using the charger recommended for your vaping device. Don’t charge your vaping device overnight or in direct sunlight, and regularly check your device for damage.

Maintaining your vaping device battery

Proper care of your vaping device will help ensure the lithium-ion battery inside lasts for the correct amount of time and help avoid some safety-related issues.

·      Store and charge your device at room temperature, where you can see it.2

·      Don’t try to recharge batteries that are not rechargeable.

·      Use the proper charger for the battery type.

·      Don’t modify or repair devices with batteries unless recommended by the manufacturer.

·      Keep batteries away from metal, like coins or keys.

·      Keep batteries out of your pockets, purses and bags.1

·      Don’t leave batteries out in the sun or in a hot or cold car.2

·      Don’t charge your battery for longer than the recommended charging time.

·      Charge your battery before it drops below 30% to help it last longer and work safely. Do not keep it plugged in and charged at 100% for long periods.2

Disposal

Dispose of your used batteries according to local municipal hazardous waste requirements. It’s not safe to put batteries in household garbage.1

How long should vape batteries last?

Battery life depends on how often you use your vaping device and how well you maintain it. Disposable vaping devices come with a certain number of puffs before the battery dies. Rechargeable vaping devices can be recharged and used again, but their batteries can still deteriorate over time.

When to replace your vaping device

Knowing when to replace your vaping device can help avoid battery issues. If you notice any of the issues above and can’t troubleshoot the problem, it might be time to replace your vape. Physical damage like cracks and leaks can also mean it’s time for a new vaping device.
